Why is using the 6DOF important in a workout?

Conventional fitness moves only multi-planar at best: up and down like squatting, front and back like lunging, and right left like side-lunging. However, the body moves in 6 “degrees of freedom” not merely 3.   In our daily lives, we not only heave up and down, surge front and back and sway right and left, but we also pitch by bending forward and backward, yaw by twisting right and left, and roll by bending right and left. Combining the “6 degrees of freedom” creates the magical grace of human movement which we all deserve to keep throughout our long lives.

Our body must work as a whole in order to accomplish our daily tasks. So why do some of us isolate our body parts in machines and think that it will help in our daily life?

  • Heaving: Moving up and down like squatting down every morning on “the throne”.
  • Swaying: Moving left and right as though you are ice skating
  • Surging: Moving forward and back as when you are walking
  • Pitching: Tilting up and down like Japanese people bowing to each other.
  • Yawing: Turning left and right like when someone calls your name from behind and you twist to see who it is.
  • Rolling: Tilting side to side – imagine being at a packed concert holding your lighter up high and moving your upper body from side to side rocking with the band.

Program Overview

In this video I focus on building a better body by using movements that cover all 6 degrees of freedom.  And because we will be using body weight movements, you can do this workout anywhere.

The full workout is about 25 minutes in length including the joint prep warm up and yoga cool down.

In this video I will first take you through a full Joint Preparation warm up. Then I explain in detail all six exercises for each level of the body weight workout. After that I instruct you in great detail how to perform the yoga compensatory poses.

I’ve offered three different levels of EACH exercise so there is something for everyone.
